If you wanted a more traditional pea coat, you’d have to board a time machine and enlist in the US Navy circa World War I. Back then, the peacoat wasn’t just a ruggedly cool piece of outerwear, it was cutting edge technology. Wool kept the wearer warm even when wet. Navy blue hid the ravages of salt water, grime and sun, and the large lapels popped up and could be closed with a throat latch to seal the wearer in from the elements. The length, hitting just at the top of the thighs, allowed for ease of movement when sailors had to climb the rigging.
